5 x 7 ½ inches. 335 numbered pages. Bound in the standard red cloth with the paper graphic cover to front board and the expected blue graphic and "Legio Mariae" to the spine. There are a few prior owner's marks (including a note by Mary Murphy on the front free endpaper and a Dublin address noted in the rear notes section) and six full page illustrations. The cover is in good condition, with very light wear and a small impression near the lower right corner of the rear cover. Provenance: Greene's Bookshop in Dublin (famous from the mention made in James Joyce's Ulysses). Enclosed with the book are several interesting items of associated ephemera (the front free endpaper is slightly discolored from where they were enclosed): 1. a magazine photo of the Boys of St. Mary's with a magazine article on the reverse by Donal Murphy, from a "Centenary Souvenir" undated but apparently 1960s vintage, which is folded, and a little curled where it protruded from the cover, 2. an undated invitation to join the Legion to visit and care for the Youths at St. Patrick's Institution, Mountjoy Prison, with a Dublin meeting address and phone number, 3. a well-used Legio Mariae service leaflet dated (from the permission) 26 Jan. 1950, 4. a John Hinde postcard (worn) from County Mayo, depicting Blacksod Lighthouse, Co. Mayo Blacksod, undated but apparently 1970s or later, and 5. a newspaper clipping dated August 15, [1960] regarding the Sacrifice at Derrygallon by Padraig O Maidin. An interesting piece of Irish Catholic devotional history. Contains recognitions by Popes Pius XI, Pius XII, and John XXII, and the Imprimatur of the Archbishop of Ireland, where the Legion originated. Details the history, object and rules for the organization, as well as a host of prayers and devotional aids.
